Whatever stage you're at with studies, life and faith you will find a place of belonging here at Alks. Scroll down to find out more about what's going to be happening in September!

Students at St Alkmunds

Whether you're a first-time-away-from-home student, an international student, grad student or are already in Derby and looking for a community to be part of, we would love to welcome you to Alks and to Tabernacle, our 18-30s missional community. We have a wide variety of things going on, and below you will find some of the things that will be happening in the coming year. We're always up for giving new ideas a try, and what we do is geared around community, friendship, discipleship, and mission. These are fuelled by prayer, worship and more discipleship. Tabernacle is overseen by Ben, our Lay Pioneer Pastor who you can contact here.

Tabernacle Network

Tabernacle groups are the heartbeat of our life together. We meet weekly and alternate between reading, studying and praying through scripture and a variety of alternatives including 'Big Questions', socials, prayer events, city-wide worship events and others. There are currently two Tabernacle groups, one meets on Tuesday evenings and the other on Wednesdays, however we come together fairly regularly to hang out.

what is there for students?

We encourage students to be part of the wider Tabernacle network as we believe that integrating as part of the wider body of Christ is important for our growth as disciples of Jesus. However, we do have some specific things going on for you. We will go on trips together to Bounce, hang out for drinks to talk about what missional living as a student looks like (we call these Living Mission Sessions), form a pub quiz team and join with the rest of Tabernacle to go on a short retreat together. Importantly, we also eat a lot of home-cooked food!

On Sunday mornings you can expect a warm welcome, sung worship (led by our worship group), biblical teaching and decent coffee! We will be hosting some welcome meals through September and into October, so keep an eye on this page for dates and times. Any student is welcome!

On Sunday evenings we have our Liminal gathering. This is somewhat different to your normal Sunday evening service. On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays we will be running The Question Sessions, when we will be offering our most authentic responses to questions that you can submit over the summer and during Welcome Week, allowing you to discuss it and offer your thoughts in a safe, open environment. On the 4th Sundays we will be meeting as The Gathered for relaxed sung worship, bible teaching and prayer. After every Sunday evening we head off to the pub (this is just as important as what we do in the church building!). Find out more by clicking here.
