Students at St Alkmunds
Whether you're a first-time-away-from-home student, an international student, grad student or are already in Derby and looking for a community to be part of, we would love to welcome you to Alks and to Tabernacle, our 18-30s missional community. We have a wide variety of things going on, and below you will find some of the things that will be happening in the coming year. We're always up for giving new ideas a try, and what we do is geared around community, friendship, discipleship, and mission. These are fuelled by prayer, worship and more discipleship. Tabernacle is overseen by Ben, our Lay Pioneer Pastor who you can contact here.
Tabernacle groups are the heartbeat of our life together. We meet at different times throughout the week, and because of the different nature of the groups often follow their own programs. There are two Tabernacle groups. 'Food For Thought' meets twice a month on Sundays for lunch after the morning service. The other, 'Home', meets on Wednesdays and is currently doing the Pilgrim Course.
what is there for students?
We encourage students to be part of the wider Tabernacle network as we believe that integrating as part of the wider body of Christ is important for our growth as disciples of Jesus. However, we do have some specific things going on for you. Primarily we encourage students to join 'Home', which meets on Wednesday evenings at Ben & Kelly's house where you'll find a warm welcome, a home away from home, authenticity, discipleship, good fun and family. From there, anything can happen!
If you're an international student you are very welcome to join Tabernacle. We are currently exploring launching a specific international students bible study to help with English as well as discipleship. Watch this space!
On Sunday mornings you can expect a warm welcome, sung worship (led by our worship group), biblical teaching and decent coffee (decaf is available, as is tea and a variety of herbal and soft drinks... and hot chocolate)! All are welcome, so if you'd like to find out a bit more about Sunday mornings click here.
On Sunday evenings Liminal, our new church plant gathers at 6PM. This is somewhat different to your normal Sunday evening service. We are currently meeting in homes and relatively small in number but are working towards a fully accessible venue in the very near future. Everyone is welcome to Liminal, but perhaps if you have questions about faith, feel disillusioned about Christianity/church or maybe are considering ditching church while you're at uni this is the space for you. You see at Liminal there's no pressure, it's a space for you to genuinely explore and question things you might previously have been told you aren't allowed to question. Our gatherings consist of food, conversation, music and teaching. Find out more by clicking here.
